Now's the time for more Community Organizers!

Scott wrote all Meetup Organizers and Assistant Organizers saying, "I ask you to encourage others to follow your lead and be Community Organizers.”

In honor of the U.S. election, we're doing something we've never done before: We’re offering a coupon for $15 off Meetup to new Organizers and the existing Organizers who inspire them.

Q: Who can use this coupon?

Anyone! New Organizers get $15 off when they step up to organize a new Meetup Group. And existing Organizers get $15 off if they inspire someone else to become a new Organizer.

Q: Who would make a great new Meetup Organizer?

Anyone who sees the potential for local community about something important to them. Maybe it's a friend or family member. Maybe it's a member of your Meetup with Organizer potential. Maybe it's someone who was involved in the U.S. election and now has the bug to be a Community Organizer!

Q: Ok, how do I inspire people to start Meetups?

Get the word out: talk to them, call them, email them, email your Meetup Group, post online, set a Facebook or Twitter status ("Looking out for potential Community Organizers").

Q: What should I say?

Here’s a suggestion. Feel free to copy-and-paste it:

Hey,

Have I told you how much I love being a Meetup Organizer? Meetup.com helps you run a local group about whatever you’re interested in. It’s very rewarding, and I think you would make a great Meetup Organizer!

In changing times, especially tough economic times, local community is more important than ever. I know there's something important to you that would benefit from a local Meetup Group bringing people together face-to-face. This is the perfect week to get started, and Meetup is giving $15 off their cheap fees.

Go to http://www.meetup.com, start a new Meetup Group, and enter the coupon code “organizer” to get $15 off. Check out this page for more information and detailed instructions. Just so you know, the coupon expires on November 11 (at 11:11PM EST). Step up and be a Community Organizer!

Q: How does an existing Organizer get $15 off?

If an existing Organizer inspires a friend, family member, coworker, or anyone to start a new Meetup Group using this coupon, the existing Organizer can use that coupon, too!

  • Log into Meetup.
  • Click “Account” (on the top right of any page.)
  • Click “Subscription Info” (on the left.)
  • Click “change” (next to your current subscription plan.)

  • Click “Enter a coupon?”
  • A box will pop up. Type in “organizer”.
  • Click “Submit.”
  • Click “Change Subscription.”

couponblog2.jpgQ: When does this amazing offer expire?
The coupon must be redeemed by November 11th at 11:11PM EST. Yes, that’s 11/11 11:11PM EST.

Q: Can existing Organizers use the coupon without inspiring people to become new Organizers and starting new Meetup Groups?

We know existing Organizers will only use the coupon after they've inspired someone else to become a new Organizer. Remember the honor system? We’re trusting you on this one!

Q: With all this talk of Community Organizers, is Meetup HQ associated with Obama’s campaign?

Nope, we’re not a political organization. Meetup is for everyone. And Meetup Groups embrace a wide range of political views. Some Meetups are definitely explicitly about politics, but most are not. Meetup HQ believes in local community for all. We see ourselves as "vital plumbing for democracy" and work toward people everywhere self-organizing powerful local community about whatever's important to them.

Q: Who should I contact if I have any questions or problems?

If you have any questions or need help, click here to contact Meetup Support.

What if I inspire a bunch of people? Can you add them up?

Jeff stole my question! But I'll repeat it; what if I inspire more than one?

This is not a good deal. I organize over 10 meetup groups around the country and to qualify for the $15.00 off I must be a new organizer? I would like to open more meetup groups but I want the same deal as the new organizers who never started a meetup before.

Hey Folks, It's really simple. Start by sharing the coupon code with a friend. If you share the code, then feel free redeem it yourself with your next purchase. :) There's no double coupon redemption there either - but please do so by November 11th!

I feel this is a great deal for both new organizers and existing ones.

Thank you!

WOO HOOO! My friend that was part of my Bunco meetup group moved to Idaho! She is starting a group there! *dances*

Thanks, Meetup!

I'm confused... how are you going to connect inspirers to inspirees?
I get a lot of visitors to pagannews.com and there's a lot of encouragement to join meetup groups and this would be a great tool to encourage them to start their own...

How will you or I know they came in on my recommendation? Wouldn't it be easier just to have them type in the member ID of the organizer that recommended them?

I think this is a great idea, but it will probably take more than the 5 days given to find new Organizers. Give us a month, and we could probably rock the communities of the world!

Sorry Meetup, not gonna work for free...

If I get just one person to be an Organizer at $19.00 a month, I've generated $228 per year for Meetup.com (12 months x $19.00). A $15 dollar coupon isn't even 10% of the yearly revenue I just generated for them and is a waste of my time. There's virtually no cost to adding a meetup group for them since everything is automated and storage is cheap so meetup isn't losing anything and quite possibly has a new organizer/customer - thanks to me.

Since I have to pay meetup.com a monthly fee for for being an organizer, (especially when limited to just three groups), I want a monthly percentage of the money I generate for them as a Sales Rep because that's what I would be for the company!

This is on the honor system, so there's no need to let us know who signed up based upon your recommendation. Just passing it along is enough. Every Organizer is an inspiration to someone, so 'elect' your favorite newbie Organizer by giving that person the code.

Thanks for your reply Andrea, I'll just post the info out there then. I still think you might want to be able to track how your growth is occurring so you can find out where your centers of gravity are in the community...

Just a thought,
Vaughan

As a Senior Ad Agency Writer, please hear me when I tell you Meetup is a great outfit but directions like these are OPPRESSIVE! I don't know anyone who would wade through this much detail to save a few bucks. I recommend rethinking and simplifying your offerings from the ground up.

I was lucky this time and knew someone wanting to start a group. Next time if there is one you should allow people a little longer then a few days maybe a month..
