Mother's Day can be tough when your mother is no longer with you.
But on Meetup, many of our members agree that the best thing to do is come together to support each other. That's what Meetup is all about.
So we wanted to take a moment and honor those who are coming together to support each other and honor their mothers during this difficult time of year.
The New York City Motherless Daughters Meetup Group will meet in Central Park to release balloons in memory of the mothers they have lost. One member explains how helpful it can be to surround yourself with the only other people who can understand.
No one can really understand what it's like to be a motherless daughter unless you are one. Because of our shared common thread, there was an honoring of the sacred space and each other with compassionate and authentic listening, caring and sharing. Losing one's mother is a huge rite of passage, no matter the circumstances, age, culture, race, religion, etc. The lost connection is tremendous. This group is a space that helps supply a little life raft in that sea.
Over in Georgia, the Atlanta Mama Mia Sisterhood will get together to share mementos and photos in celebration of their Moms.
Every time I attend an event with this group, but especially the wonderful annual Tea, I walk away with a stronger sense of self. Listening to and watching this diverse group of strong women is an uplifting experience, despite our shared bond of grief. I always love to see the pictures others bring and share mine, this year was especially hard for me but also especially rewarding looking at others' mementos during tea.
Cheers to those who are coming together to help one another during this difficult time! Our very best to you all.

I'm a motherless daughter whose Mom's birthday is always so very close to Mother's Day.
It's bittersweet since I have two lovely daughters to share Mother's Day with :)
