In the News: Backyard Chickens in USA Today

This morning's issue of USA Today has a great article on a national trend: city folks raising chickens in their backyards.

Of course, thousands of backyard poultry enthusiasts are members of their local chicken communities on Meetup, so we weren't surprised to Meetup Organizer Andy Schneider quoted in the article.

Organizers like Andy (you may know him as the 'Chicken Whisperer' from previous blog posts) have been instrumental in bringing urban chickens home to roost.

At the beginning of this year, there were 4 pet chicken Meetup Groups in the US.

Now, there are dozens!

So even if chickens themselves aren't great flyers, the urban poultry movement is really taking flight.

Andy, Organizer and 'Chicken Whisperer' on CNN and NPR!

It's been just a little while since we'd heard from Andy, Organizer of the Altanta Pet Chicken Meetup Group and better known these days as the 'Chicken Whisperer'.

But that's just because he's been so busy.

Of course, Andy and the rest of the Atlanta Pet Chicken Meetup have been ahead of the curve for some time now.

Organizer of the Week: Broadcasting Backyard Poultry!

We can't get enough of Andy Schneider and his Atlanta Pet Chicken Meetup, and we're not alone.  The Chicken Whisperer is back!  This time he has his own radio show, and will likely be hitting the national news soon.  He's also our Organizer of the Week. 

The backyard chicken movement is growing, and the Can't Miss Meetups just keep on clucking...we look forward to Chickenstock 2009, Eggtoberfest and even more great news to come from his fabulous Meetup.  Congratulations, Andy!

We're big fans! We profiled The Chicken Whisperer on the blog last November as a Can't Miss Meetup. The Atlanta-Journal published a super egg-exciting article about his facinating Meetup today.

Special thanks to Tegan for finding another wonderful Can't Miss Meetup. 

Andy, a self professed Chicken Whisperer, runs The Atlanta Pet Chicken Meetup Group, which has over 100 Pet Chicken Buffs.  The photo section is full of adorable little chicks.  There's a Chicken Classifieds section too, just in case new members want to start a menagerie of their own! 

There's something for everyone here, whether they're Organic Farmers, Chicken Farmers or people who just plain like chicken.

Check out their egg-citing upcoming Christmas Party at the Golden Corral!  They have a special Toys for Tots collection planned, which is also worth bawking about.
