When did you start working here and how can you creatively and loosely describe your job?
I started at Meetup back in July, 2007 and work in Team Development with Lilli and Linda. I've been recruiting mainly for the Community Support team one superstar at a time and have watched the team triple (!!!) over the last year and a half. I help MEME* Team-ers with basic run of the mill how-do-I's in relation to their HR needs, and my most popular day of the month is Whole Foods Gift Card Day - one of the fantastic perks to working at Meetup.
When I interviewed for my current job, I remember going on and on and on about my whole life story. Were you really interested? Do you remember anything of what I told you?
Of course I do! It's odd the things that I remember (you'd be shocked) about interviews I've done over the years. I remember that your cover letter said "Hello People at Meetup!" which is much more lively than the run of the mill, "To Whom it May Concern:" or "Dear Sir or Madam." I also remember you telling me that you took real pride in DIY work (doing it yourself), and that you weren't all about making tons of money (riiight), but rather being in a place where you thought your work mattered. So there. I remembered.
The environment at Meetup is very relaxed, but when I interviewed I showed up in a suit. I think I was even wearing a tie. What do you think of men in suits? I hope you didn't make fun of me.
I love a man in a suit! But it's all about how it's worn...confidence is the most important accessory and it can't be bought.
You are originally from Florida. Have you ever spent spring break in Daytona Beach?
Ironically, I never once spent spring break in Daytona or any of the other spring break havens (and never had an interest in doing so). I much preferred catching up with friends in the West Palm Beach area, avoiding the crowds, and not having to pay for a hotel. Plus, my mom was always thrilled to see me since I went to college in the Northeast, so there was always a full supply of Oreos when I came home. ;)
You run the Working@Meetup Group with Linda (Director of Team Development). How does it work? Why do you do it? Who can attend?
Working@Meetup is designed for people who are looking to work at Meetup, want to learn more about what it's like to work here (first-hand), and who have qualifications that are in line with positions that we're currently hiring for. It's an approval-only group because we want to make sure that spots are open for those who will most benefit from the experience.
