Community & Environment: Meetup Highlight
As interest in the topic of sustainable living has increased over the years, so has the number of permaculture Meetup Groups. We’ve noticed a trend in this category: backyard chickens!
Whether you’re interested in raising chickens for eggs or just as pets, backyard chicken Meetup Groups offer a wide range of fun and informative activities. The San Antonio Backyard Barnyard Meetup Group, for example, recently got together at the Fancy Feathers 4-H open chicken show which included an egg competition and a ‘cluck off contest’!
If you’re just getting started with your new chicks, the Los Angeles Urban Chicken Enthusiasts Meetup Group might have what you’re looking for. They’re 1,300 Members strong, and recently hosted a Teach-in/Pot luck Meetup to introduce newbies to the joys of keeping chickens as companions and “gardening soul mates”.
Backyard chicken Meetups are giving back to their communities too. The Just Food City Chicken Meetup NYC holds regular workshops and programs for urban chicken-keepers, but they also pitch in to build coops together.
Raising chickens is a great family activity, and a insightful exercise in environmentalism and sustainability. You can find a pet chicken Meetup Group near you here!
